The second round of the 2026 F4 Spanish Championship at Portimão delivered a weekend full of close qualifying battles, dominant performances and late twists, with Borys Lyzen emerging as the standout driver after claiming victories in the first two races, while a dramatic post-race reshuffle handed Kasper Schormans victory in the final encounter.
Qualifying 1 set the tone for a highly competitive weekend. Jacob Micallef secured pole position by the narrowest of margins, edging his rivals by just thousandths of a second around the demanding Algarve circuit. The session underlined the remarkable parity throughout the field, with several drivers separated by minimal gaps and ready to challenge for victory.
Race 1 saw Borys Lyzen convert his pace into a commanding victory, becoming the first winner of the weekend after a controlled performance at the front. Behind him, Nathan Tye secured second place, his first podium of the regular season, while Kasper Schormans completed the podium in third after another solid race. The result immediately placed Lyzen among the leading contenders in the championship battle.
The Polish driver repeated the feat in Race 2. Once again, Lyzen proved untouchable, managing the race from the front to secure his second victory of the weekend and become the second driver to score multiple wins during the 2026 campaign after Rocco Coronel. His performance reinforced both his consistency and outright speed, while the chasing pack continued to exchange positions in a tightly contested fight behind him.
Sunday morning’s second qualifying session brought another storyline, as Tecnicar by Amtog locked out the front row through Andrej Petrovic and Nacho Tuñón. The result highlighted the team’s growing strength and appeared to place them in a perfect position to secure a home victory in the weekend’s final race.
Race 3, however, produced the most dramatic chapter of the event. Tuñón crossed the finish line first ahead of Petrovic after a chaotic final lap, with Schormans initially classified third. Post-race investigations would completely alter the outcome. Penalties handed to both Tecnicar drivers for failing to maintain the prescribed distance to the Safety Car during the Safety Car restart reshuffled the order and promoted Kasper Schormans to victory, giving him a memorable first win in F4.
The revised classification saw Schormans declared the winner, with Blascos promoted to second place and Coronel completing the podium in third. Further changes affected Micallef, who initially received a five-second penalty after the race. Following a review, a track limits infringement was removed and the penalty withdrawn, allowing the Maltese driver to move up to fourth place in the final results.
Portimão once again demonstrated the depth and competitiveness of the F4 Spanish Championship grid. Different teams challenged for victories, qualifying honours were decided by mere thousandths and every race produced intense battles throughout the field.
The championship picture also took shape after the Algarve weekend. Rocco Coronel leaves Portimão at the top of the standings with 76 points and as the leading rookie, following another consistent points haul. Kasper Schormans sits second on 72 points, just ahead of Borys Lyzen on 71, whose two victories brought him firmly into title contention. Noah Monteiro is fourth with 59 points, while Aleix Piñera completes the top five on 51 after two rounds of competition.
In the teams’ standings, MP Motorsport has established an early advantage with 148 points, opening a significant gap over Griffin Core with 96 points, while KCL Motorsport occupies third place with 91 points. Full championship standings can be found here
